Jacob, Kevin and Natasha watch Doctor Who with Dawn and I on Saturday evenings. When Dawn and I woke up Saturday morning, we were greeted by fog over everything, and I became teary eyed for the England I Never Knew. So I figured the best way to address this was by making organ meat pie.
I had to drive all over creation to find the beef kidneys, since McDonagle's was out, and no normal grocery store carried it. So I went to Bicklemeyer's instead. Apparently there was a meat shortage looming, since it looked like the entire population of Kansas City, Kansas was there, buying meat in huge cubes.
Anyway, supplies in hand, I sent about making the pie.
Cleaning the kidney was a singular experience. You are supposed to remove both the fat and the "tubes", these vein-like things that run through the kidney. I looked at the intricate web of tubes, said "Fuck this noise" and just removed the fat.
Then you have to cube the steak and the kidneys.
Then brown everything in lard or bacon drippings.
The pie is basically beef parts and onion in a gravy sauce.
It's pretty tasty. Particularly washed down with brown ale, guinness and cherry coke. The latter two go together oddly well.
The
Doctor Who episode was about space vampires, and their giant space vampire leader, whom Our Heroes killed by using a rocket ship as a giant stake. Pure awesome.
