Crap I've Been Listening To

Fraction's "Mix-Tape Phrenology" thing he posts has prompted me to engage in the sincerest form of flattery, and copy shamelessly. It will differ from Matt's in that he is way more into music than I am, and provides a level of description that, when read by me, sounds like it came from a Martian. A Martian that is really into music, and whose world is created by it, spun through their Martian iPod.

Anyway, I mention all of this because I tend to be near the opposite end of this spectrum, and float around in the realm of a junk gourmet. (Read: I have no taste) Or, at least I find an appreciation for things that more musically well traveled people would probably call trite or boring.

SO! Let's begin.

Otep: "Battle Ready"

Pros: I've had a warm spot for Otep ever since seeing them on Headbanger's Ball, and seeing the small woman who does the Cookie Monster growling on this band (although this song has a low Cookie Monster quotient). Chorus has a base line like a giant robot going around kicking everything's ass. Even rivers and clouds. I like to listen to this song while making drawings that involve a lot of action and explosions. BOOOM! Cons: Some of the lyrics of their other songs remind me of poetry I wrote in high school/early college. Just the memory that I wrote that stuff makes me flinch. Category: Adolescent Metalcore Angst Rock.

Van Der Graaf Generator: "Pioneers over C"

Pros: Awesome Prog Rock. Cons: Awesome Prog Rock. Category: Awesome Prog Rock

Van Der Graaf Generator is a band I found out about after someone posted a Belgian ("I can't think of anything worse than 'Belgian'") TV appearance of them performing "Plague of Lighthouse Keepers". It was crazy. With candles everywhere, that for some reason suddenly changed into sparklers halfway through, and they were freaking out over their keyboards, and some guy had two saxophones around his neck, and it was very Sincere, and I loved it. This isn't that song, but I think it's about space travel. ("C" being the speed of light, I believe) It's good too.

The mp3 cuts off partway through. Deal.

That's all I have for now, I'll post more later.

Another Five Fists of Science Page:

Can anyone recommend a good filter for photoshop that replicates an "old photograph" effect?
