Cigarettes

I've been reading Cigarettes Are Sublime, and while it is supposed to be a book that puts cigarettes in a context that allows people to get a handle on their habit, and to thus quit, so far it just makes me want to smoke them.

So I did. I went out and bought a box of Nat Shermans. I usually smoke a pipe, but these are pretty enjoyable. I was smoking while walking back to work from lunch, and passed a woman taking her kids out of her minivan. She looked at me like I had just farted in her face.

If only because of that, cigarettes are now one of my favorite things ever.

That aside, I have a healthy respect for tobacco and smoke with the same caution I would use with handling dynamite. It's interesting how cigarettes compare to a pipe, though. I can smoke a pipe pretty much whenever and not feel a craving. I smoked two cigarettes yesterday and I wanted one when I woke up this morning.

I've read that part of this is because of the instant gratification nature of the cigarette. You don't have to spend a minute or so packing a pipe and getting it lit. It's just pull, light and go.

So, I need to be extra careful here.

...

Still, I like how to certain people a cigarette is like wearing a FUCK YOU t-shirt.

Heh heh.
