New Doctor Who

(Contains spoilers (?))

So, thanks to Fraction I torrented the leaked pilot episode of the new Doctor Who.

In short, I was pleased and disappointed. I like Eccleston as the Doctor, and think that he brings a nice mix of the other Doctors to the table. He comes across as a blend of Tom Baker and Sylvester McCoy. Bringing the Autons back is a nice touch.

But, it was also too goofy in parts, or maybe "awkward goofy." The old series was certainly shoddy, and goofy, but I, perhaps mistakenly, chalked that up to a certain innocence and lack of budget. It could just be me, but I dont think you can go back to that. It's like how you couldn't make a comic just like the old Legion of Superheroes today. You would have to make it ironic and all wink-wink with the audience, and they don't really seem to be doing that.

And, oddly, I didn't care for Bryan Hitch's design of the TARDIS console room that much. I mean, it was fine, but it didn't really sing for me.

That said, I'm as giddy as a schoolgirl about the whole mess, and will be watching every episode.
